Perseverance enabled the few female delegates to the founding conference of the United Nations (UN) to anchor the principle of equality between men and women at several points in the UN Charter.

The commitment to the cause of women initially took place with the aspect of realizing human rights. Since the 1970s, the aim has been to strengthen the role of women in development processes and to improve their participation in political and social life. At the turn of the millennium, the focus was on combating violence against women and increasing the participation of women in peace processes. Institutions were set up for all of these tasks, the year and the decade of women declared, four world conferences held and a convention adopted. Today, the focus is on effectively protecting the dignity and rights of women and achieving real equality at all levels.
