The High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) is the central United Nations platform for reviewing and following up on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) globally. Established in 2012 during the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), the HLPF plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the goals set for sustainable development are met.
The HLPF meets annually for eight days under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), including a three-day ministerial segment. Every four years, it convenes at the level of Heads of State and Government for two days under the General Assembly’s auspices. These meetings are critical for assessing progress and addressing challenges in implementing the SDGs.
As part of its follow-up and review mechanisms, the 2030 Agenda encourages member states to conduct regular and inclusive reviews of progress at the national and sub-national levels. These Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) serve as a basis for the HLPF’s annual reviews and facilitate the sharing of experiences, challenges, and successes in achieving the SDGs. They aim to strengthen policies, institutions, and multi-stakeholder partnerships for sustainable development.
This year’s theme for the HLPF is “Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient, and innovative solutions.” The theme underscores the need for innovative approaches to overcome current global challenges and achieve the SDGs effectively.
Each year, specific SDGs are reviewed in depth to assess global and national progress. This year the SDGs under review are SDG 1 (No poverty), SDG 2 (Zero hunger), SDG 13 (Climate action), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and strong institutions), SDG 17 (Partnership for the goals)
Join us as we shape a sustainable future together, leveraging the power of youth and innovative solutions to achieve the 2030 Agenda.
